Buying jewellery is different from ordinary shopping. We do not choose a piece based solely on its price, material or current trends. More often than not, we are looking for something that will remind us of an engagement, wedding, the birth of a child, graduation, anniversary or another important moment in life.
That is why many customers ask themselves the same question: Is it safe to buy jewellery online, or is it better to visit a physical jewellery store?
As a jeweller, I do not believe there is one universally correct answer. Both options have their advantages, and the best experience often comes from combining the two. Shopping online allows you to explore the market and compare dozens of designs, while a physical store gives you the opportunity to see the jewellery in person, try it on and speak to someone who understands precious metals, gemstones and craftsmanship.
A successful modern jewellery store should therefore not force customers to choose between shopping online and in person. Instead, it should allow them to move naturally between both worlds.
Online Customers Are Looking for the Same Things as Customers in Store
We launched the Princess Jewellery online store more than ten years ago. One of the things that surprised us most at the time was discovering that customers shopping online are not actually very different from those who walk into one of our physical stores.
Both are primarily looking for four things:
trust,
quality,
transparent information,
jewellery that has genuine meaning to them.
The difference is not so much what customers want, but rather how they prefer to reach their decision.
Some people enjoy browsing dozens of rings from the comfort of their home in the evening, saving their favourite designs and returning to them several times before making a decision. Others need to hold the jewellery in their hands, see how it sparkles in natural light or find out how it looks against their skin.
Neither approach is better than the other. Each suits a different situation, type of jewellery and personality.
What Are the Benefits of Buying Jewellery Online?
The greatest advantage of an online jewellery store is convenience. Within just a few minutes, customers can browse engagement rings, wedding rings, earrings, necklaces or bracelets without having to visit several different stores.
Shopping online also makes it possible to:
compare different materials, metal colours and gemstones,
filter jewellery by price or style,
return to favourite designs without feeling under time pressure,
share a specific piece with a partner or family member,
read detailed information about dimensions, fastenings and jewellery care,
order a gift even when visiting a store in person is not possible.
For many people, privacy is another important advantage. When choosing an engagement ring, for example, some customers prefer to explore their options quietly on their own before having to answer questions from a salesperson.
Online shopping is also particularly convenient when customers are already familiar with the brand, have had a positive previous experience and know which materials, sizes or types of jewellery suit them.
Which Types of Jewellery Can You Confidently Buy Online?
Online shopping is particularly suitable for jewellery that does not require an exact size or complicated adjustments.
This may include:
earrings,
pendants,
chains with adjustable lengths,
bracelets with extension chains,
simple jewellery gifts,
another piece from a collection you already know.
Rings can, of course, also be purchased online. In this case, however, it is important to know the correct ring size and check whether the particular design can be resized if necessary.
Resizing a simple ring without stones is generally easier than adjusting a ring set with gemstones around the entire band.
The more information customers have before purchasing, the lower the risk of being surprised by something once the jewellery arrives.

How Can You Recognise a Trustworthy Online Jewellery Store?
With jewellery, beautiful photography is not enough. A trustworthy online retailer should provide enough specific information for customers to understand exactly what they are purchasing.
Before placing an order, I recommend checking the following information carefully.
1. Precise Information About the Material and Its Fineness
General descriptions such as “gold” or “silver” are not sufficient.
The product information should clearly state whether the jewellery is made, for example, from 585/1000 gold, 750/1000 gold or 925/1000 sterling silver.
You should also pay attention to surface treatments and plating. Gold-plated silver is not the same as a piece made entirely from gold, even though the two may look similar in a photograph.
2. Information About the Gemstone
Customers should know whether they are purchasing a natural gemstone, a laboratory-created gemstone, a synthetic stone or an imitation.
For example, a natural diamond, a lab-grown diamond and cubic zirconia may look similar in a small product photograph, but their properties, origin and value are very different.
3. The Actual Dimensions of the Jewellery
A close-up photograph can make a small pendant appear much larger than it really is.
That is why it is important to check its height, width and weight, as well as the length of the chain where applicable.
For earrings, it is also worth checking the type of fastening. For rings, pay attention to the width of the band and the height of the gemstone setting.
4. Certificates and Proof of Materials
A reputable jewellery store should clearly explain how the authenticity of its materials and gemstones is verified.
Princess Jewellery pieces are supplied with a certificate of authenticity, and further information can be found in our Frequently Asked Questions.
5. Returns, Exchanges and Aftercare
Jewellery is not something we purchase only for the day it arrives. What happens several months or even years later matters too.
It is therefore worth checking whether the retailer offers:
professional jewellery cleaning and inspection,
repairs to damaged clasps or fastenings,
gemstone setting checks,
ring resizing,
clearly defined warranty conditions,
transparent returns and exchange policies.
It is often the quality of aftercare that reveals the difference between an anonymous online retailer and a genuine jewellery specialist.
Why Do Physical Jewellery Stores Still Play an Irreplaceable Role?
Jewellery is a physical object that is worn directly against the body. A photograph can show its design very well, but it is much harder to communicate its weight, comfort, true metal colour or the way a gemstone reacts to movement and light.
In a physical store, you can notice details that are difficult to judge online:
whether a ring feels comfortable between your fingers,
whether earrings feel too heavy,
where exactly a necklace sits on your neckline,
how the jewellery looks against your skin tone,
whether yellow, white or rose gold suits you best,
whether the fastening is comfortable enough for everyday wear.
Another major advantage is the ability to compare several options side by side.
A customer may arrive convinced that they want a very delicate ring, only to discover after trying it on that a bolder band suits them better. Someone else may be deciding between white and yellow gold and only realise which colour looks more natural once they see both on their own hand.

Which Types of Jewellery Are Most Worth Seeing in Person?
A personal consultation is particularly valuable when choosing jewellery with significant financial or emotional value.
Engagement Rings
When choosing an engagement ring, appearance is only one part of the decision.
You should also consider the correct size, the profile of the band, the height of the gemstone setting and how practical the ring will be for everyday wear.
A high-set gemstone can look impressive, but it may not be ideal for someone with a very active lifestyle. On the other hand, a setting that is too low can affect how a wedding ring will sit next to the engagement ring later on.
Wedding Rings
Comfort is essential when choosing wedding rings because most couples plan to wear them every day for many years.
A difference of just one or two millimetres in width can look and feel much more significant on the hand than it appears in a photograph.
The shape of the inner profile, thickness of the ring, rounded edges and the possibility of resizing it in the future are also important considerations.
During an in-person consultation, you can also check how well your wedding ring sits alongside your engagement ring.

Statement Gemstones or Diamonds
The colour of gemstones can change depending on the lighting.
A sapphire, for example, may look different under warm indoor lighting than it does in natural daylight. With diamonds, customers can compare the size, cut and the way individual stones reflect light.
Photography is an important part of choosing jewellery, but it cannot completely replace the impression of seeing a gemstone in person.
A Meaningful Personal Gift
Jewellery chosen for an anniversary, graduation or the birth of a child is often intended to become a family keepsake.
In this case, visiting a jewellery store can become part of the experience itself and can help you choose a piece that reflects not only your budget but also the personality of the person receiving it.
Visiting a Jewellery Store Is About More Than Simply Trying Pieces On
One of the things I enjoy most about working as a jeweller is seeing the different occasions that bring customers into our stores.
It is not unusual to see a father arrive with his children to choose an anniversary gift for his wife. Parents come looking for jewellery to celebrate their daughter’s graduation. A partner quietly compares engagement rings. A couple chooses between several different wedding ring designs together.
These situations remind us that jewellery is not simply a product. It is often connected to a moment that a family will remember for many years.
People may eventually forget how much a dinner cost or what they were wearing on a particular day. But they can often remember exactly how they felt when they received the ring, earrings or pendant that went on to accompany them through an important part of their life.
If you would like to take your time choosing the right piece, you can book a personal consultation at one of our Prague stores in advance.
The Best Journey Often Starts Online and Continues in Store
Customer behaviour is changing. Today, most people no longer walk into a jewellery store without doing any research beforehand.
They first browse collections online, get an idea of the prices, compare materials and save the designs that catch their attention. When they later visit the store, they already have a much clearer idea of what they are looking for.
This approach offers several advantages:
-
Customers can familiarise themselves with the collection in advance.
-
They can define their budget more accurately.
-
In store, they can focus on a smaller selection of shortlisted pieces.
-
The consultation becomes more personal and efficient.
-
The final decision does not have to be rushed.
Some customers purchase the jewellery immediately after trying it on in store. Others prefer to think about their decision once more and complete their order online later.
Both options are perfectly fine.
The role of a good jeweller is not to pressure customers into making an immediate purchase, but to provide them with enough information and confidence to make the right decision.

Does a More Expensive Metal Automatically Mean a Better Investment?
The short answer is: not necessarily.
Many people assume that the higher the purity of the gold or the more expensive the material, the better the jewellery will be as an investment.
In reality, the value of a piece of jewellery is made up of several different factors.
Its final price and future value can be influenced by:
the type, fineness and weight of the metal,
the quality of the gemstone,
the cut, colour, clarity and size of the stone,
craftsmanship,
the condition of the jewellery,
the timelessness or rarity of the design,
the origin and traceability of the materials,
current market demand,
the possibility of professional repairs and maintenance.
A higher purchase price alone therefore does not guarantee that the jewellery can later be sold at a profit.
The Retail Price of Jewellery Is Not the Same as Its Resale Value
This is one of the most important distinctions customers should understand.
The retail price of a piece of jewellery does not only reflect the value of the metal.
It also includes the design, the jeweller’s craftsmanship, gemstone setting, finishing, quality control, packaging, aftercare and other costs associated with bringing the jewellery to market.
When jewellery is sold second-hand or bought back, however, its value may be assessed primarily according to the weight and fineness of the precious metal.
For ordinary jewellery, customers therefore should not automatically expect to be able to sell it shortly after purchase for the same price or more.
If someone is looking purely for a financial investment linked to the price of gold, investment-grade gold may be more suitable than jewellery.
Jewellery serves another purpose as well: we wear it, admire it, pass it down and associate it with particular people and moments in our lives.

Is Higher-Purity Gold Always Better?
Again, there is no universal answer.
Gold with a higher purity contains a greater proportion of pure gold, but it can also be softer and more susceptible to mechanical damage.
Alloys containing a lower proportion of gold may, in some situations, be more practical for everyday wear.
The intended purpose of the jewellery is therefore crucial.
A piece worn only a few times a year for special occasions may require different qualities from a wedding ring that is exposed to everyday wear.
When choosing, you should take into account your lifestyle, type of work and willingness to provide the jewellery with regular care.
A higher gold purity therefore means a greater proportion of gold, but it does not automatically mean greater durability or that the piece will be the best choice for every customer.
Is Silver Jewellery Inferior to Gold Jewellery?
No. It is simply different.
Silver can be an excellent choice for customers looking for elegant jewellery at a more accessible price, who enjoy changing their style frequently or prefer cooler-toned metals.
Gold is generally more resistant to long-term changes in appearance and, because of its material value, is more commonly chosen for engagement rings, wedding rings and jewellery intended to be passed down through generations.
However, this does not mean that every gold piece is automatically higher quality than every silver piece.
Poorly made gold jewellery can be less comfortable and less durable than a beautifully crafted piece made from silver.
Material matters, but it should never be the only criterion.
Can Gemstones Increase the Value of Jewellery?
Yes, but it depends on their quality, rarity, origin, treatments and current market demand.
Interest may increase over time in high-quality tanzanites, exceptional sapphires, Czech garnets or moldavites, for example.
However, this does not mean that every piece of jewellery containing one of these gemstones will automatically increase in value.
Two gemstones of the same type can have completely different values.
Factors such as size, colour, clarity, cut, natural origin, possible treatments and whether these qualities can be documented all play an important role.
Future market developments can also never be guaranteed with absolute certainty.
Jewellery should therefore not be presented as a guaranteed way to increase the value of your money.
Sometimes the Greatest Value of Jewellery Cannot Be Expressed in Money
In our family jewellery business, we have often met customers who returned years later with an older piece of jewellery.
The value of the metal or gemstone may have changed significantly in the meantime, yet selling the piece was never something they considered.
A ring reminded someone of a marriage proposal. A pair of earrings had been a gift from a grandmother. A pendant had been given to a customer after the birth of her child.
Their true value was therefore not only in the materials, but above all in the memories they carried.
That is why I recommend choosing jewellery that you genuinely love and will want to wear.
If its financial value increases in the future, that can be a pleasant bonus. But the primary reasons for purchasing jewellery should be joy, quality and the personal connection you feel towards the piece.

So How Should You Choose Jewellery That Makes Sense for You?
Before making a purchase, try answering a few simple questions:
Will I wear the jewellery every day or only on special occasions?
Do I need a durable piece suitable for an active lifestyle?
Do I know the correct size and dimensions?
Is the value of the material, the design or the symbolism most important to me?
Would I like to pass the jewellery down to another generation one day?
Does the retailer also provide servicing, repairs and professional care?
Do I understand exactly which metal and gemstone I am purchasing?
If you know the answers to these questions, many types of jewellery can be comfortably purchased online.
If you are unsure about the size, metal colour, gemstone quality or comfort when worn, I recommend visiting a physical store.
Online or In Person? A Jeweller’s Final Recommendation
Choose online shopping when:
you already know and trust the brand,
you have a clear idea of the type of jewellery you want,
you know the required size and dimensions,
you are choosing earrings, a pendant or another easy-to-wear piece,
you want to compare a larger number of designs at your own pace.
Visit a physical jewellery store when:
you are choosing an engagement or wedding ring,
you are planning a higher-value purchase,
you are unsure about the correct size,
you want to compare metal and gemstone colours in person,
you require an individual adjustment,
you would like advice from an experienced professional.
In my view, the best approach is to combine both options.
Start online, familiarise yourself with the collection and save the pieces that appeal to you. Then, if you are making an important decision, visit us for a personal consultation.
Explore the collection at Princess Jewellery or visit one of our physical stores in Prague. If you would like plenty of time and privacy when making your decision, you can also book a personal appointment in advance.
Because the right piece of jewellery is not defined by its price alone. It is defined by its quality, craftsmanship and, above all, by the way it makes you feel.
