Jewellery Care Guide

Every piece of Princess Jewellery deserves to be cherished. With proper care and attention, your jewellery can retain its beauty and brilliance for years to come.

Whether you wear your favourite pieces every day or save them for special occasions, these simple recommendations will help protect their appearance and condition.

1. Everyday Jewellery Care

Jewellery is designed to be enjoyed, but everyday activities can expose it to scratches, chemicals, moisture and accidental damage.

To keep your jewellery looking its best, we recommend:

  • Removing jewellery before exercising, swimming, gardening, cleaning or other activities that may cause impact or abrasion.

  • Taking off rings, necklaces, bracelets and earrings before showering or going to bed.

  • Avoiding direct contact with perfumes, hairsprays, lotions, cosmetics and household cleaning products.

  • Putting on jewellery after applying cosmetics and allowing skincare products to absorb.

  • Handling delicate chains, gemstone settings and clasps with care.

  • Regularly checking jewellery for signs of wear, loose stones or damaged clasps.

Even precious metals and durable gemstones can become scratched or damaged through everyday wear.

2. Storing Your Jewellery

Proper storage helps prevent scratches, tangling, tarnishing and unnecessary wear.

We recommend:

  • Storing jewellery individually in a soft pouch, lined jewellery box or separate compartment.

  • Keeping necklaces and delicate chains separated to prevent tangling.

  • Storing jewellery in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight and excessive humidity.

  • Keeping pearls, opals and other delicate gemstones away from heat and extreme temperature changes.

  • Avoiding direct contact between harder gemstones and softer jewellery materials.

When travelling, use a protective jewellery case to prevent pieces from moving or rubbing against one another.

3. Caring for Gold Jewellery

Gold jewellery is valued for its lasting beauty, but even solid gold can develop fine scratches through regular wear.

To maintain its appearance:

  • Gently wipe your jewellery with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.

  • For suitable plain gold jewellery, use lukewarm water and a small amount of mild soap when necessary.

  • Rinse carefully and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth.

  • Avoid abrasive cleaning products, chlorine and harsh chemicals.

  • Remove gold rings before activities that could cause impact or scratching.

White gold jewellery may have a rhodium-plated finish that gradually wears with use. Professional rhodium replating can help restore its bright appearance.

4. Caring for Sterling Silver Jewellery

Sterling silver naturally reacts with substances in the environment and may develop a darker surface over time. This process, known as tarnishing, is normal.

To care for your silver jewellery:

  • Store pieces in a dry place when not being worn.

  • Gently clean suitable plain silver jewellery using a polishing cloth specifically designed for sterling silver.

  • Avoid prolonged exposure to moisture, perfumes and cleaning chemicals.

  • Do not use abrasive materials or harsh silver-cleaning solutions.

Silver jewellery with gold plating, rhodium plating, oxidised finishes, pearls or delicate gemstones requires additional care. Abrasive polishing can damage or remove these surface treatments.

5. Caring for Gold-Plated and Rhodium-Plated Jewellery

Plated jewellery features a surface layer of precious metal that requires gentle handling.

To help preserve its finish:

  • Avoid frequent contact with water, perfumes, cosmetics and cleaning products.

  • Remove plated jewellery before swimming, showering or exercising.

  • Clean gently with a soft, dry, non-abrasive cloth.

  • Avoid polishing compounds, ultrasonic cleaners and chemical jewellery dips unless specifically approved for the piece.

  • Store separately to reduce friction and surface wear.

Plating naturally wears over time, depending on how frequently the jewellery is worn and how it is cared for.

Professional replating may be available for selected pieces.

6. Caring for Diamond Jewellery

Both natural and laboratory-grown diamonds are exceptionally hard, but their settings and surrounding metals still require care.

To maintain their brilliance:

  • Avoid direct contact with lotions, oils and cosmetics, which can leave residue on the surface.

  • Gently clean suitable diamond jewellery using lukewarm water, mild soap and a very soft brush.

  • Rinse carefully and dry with a lint-free cloth.

  • Avoid impacts, especially around claws, prongs and delicate settings.

  • Have frequently worn diamond jewellery inspected periodically to ensure stones remain secure.

Do not use ultrasonic or steam cleaning equipment without professional confirmation that the entire piece, including its settings and any additional gemstones, is suitable.

7. Caring for Gemstone Jewellery

Different gemstones have different levels of hardness, sensitivity and resistance to heat, moisture and chemicals.

Opals

Opals require particularly gentle care.

  • Avoid sudden temperature changes, prolonged heat and direct sunlight.

  • Protect opals from impact, scratching and harsh chemicals.

  • Clean gently with a slightly damp, soft cloth and dry carefully.

  • Do not use ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaners or chemical jewellery dips.

Opal doublets, triplets and certain treated opals can be particularly sensitive to moisture.

Pearls and Mother-of-Pearl

Pearls and mother-of-pearl have delicate surfaces that can be damaged by chemicals and abrasion.

  • Put on pearl jewellery after applying perfume and cosmetics.

  • Wipe gently with a soft cloth after wearing.

  • Store separately from harder gemstones and metals.

  • Avoid ultrasonic cleaners, steam cleaning and chemical dips.

  • Do not soak pearl jewellery, particularly pieces with adhesive-mounted components.

Other Delicate Gemstones

Emeralds, turquoise, coral, lapis lazuli, malachite and certain treated gemstones may require specialised cleaning.

For these materials, gentle wiping with a soft cloth is generally preferable to immersion or mechanical cleaning.

If you are unsure about the correct care method for a particular gemstone, contact Princess Jewellery before cleaning it.

8. Ultrasonic Cleaners and Chemical Cleaning Products

Ultrasonic cleaners can be effective for certain types of jewellery, but they are not suitable for every gemstone, setting or surface finish.

We do not recommend using ultrasonic cleaners at home without first confirming that the entire jewellery piece is suitable for this method.

In particular, ultrasonic or steam cleaning should be avoided for pearls, opals, turquoise, many treated gemstones, fragile settings and jewellery containing adhesive-mounted components.

Chemical cleaning baths and abrasive polishing products should also be used only when specifically suitable for the jewellery's materials and finish.

9. Professional Jewellery Care and Maintenance

Even with careful everyday handling, jewellery may occasionally benefit from professional attention.

Depending on the type and condition of the piece, professional services may include:

  • Jewellery cleaning and inspection

  • Polishing and surface restoration

  • Checking gemstone settings and clasps

  • Rhodium plating or gold replating

  • Ring resizing and selected repairs

Princess Jewellery offers a Lifetime Jewellery Service for eligible jewellery, subject to the applicable service conditions.

If your jewellery shows signs of damage, a loose gemstone or a weakened clasp, we recommend avoiding further wear until it has been inspected.
