It has the colour of Czech forests, a story stretching back almost 15 million years and an origin connected with one of the most dramatic events in Europe’s geological history. Moldavite is neither an ordinary gemstone nor a fragment of a meteorite. It is a natural glass that formed during an ancient cosmic impact and is still found predominantly within the territory of the Czech Republic.
Its unusual origin, limited supply and unique shades of green have made moldavite highly desirable among collectors and lovers of distinctive jewellery. However, growing demand has also led to an increasing number of glass imitations. How can you recognise genuine moldavite, and what truly determines its value?
1. What is moldavite and how did it form?
Moldavite belongs to a group of natural glasses known as tektites, which form in connection with the impact of a large cosmic body on the Earth’s surface. It is not a traditional mineral with a regular crystalline structure, nor is it a piece of the meteorite itself.
Approximately 14.8 million years ago, an asteroid struck what is now Bavaria, creating the Ries crater, which is approximately 25 kilometres wide. The enormous amount of energy released by the impact melted rocks and sediments near the Earth’s surface. Some of this molten material was thrown high into the atmosphere, where it rapidly cooled and solidified into natural glass.
Individual pieces landed hundreds of kilometres away from the crater, primarily in what is now southern Bohemia and Moravia. Over the following millions of years, they were carried by water and deposited in layers of gravel and sand.
The characteristic grooves, pits and deep indentations visible on rough moldavite are not simply traces of its journey through the atmosphere. Its present-day appearance was also shaped by the long-term effects of water, soil and surrounding sediments. This is why every natural piece can have a completely unique surface structure.

What is moldavite not?
- It is not a fragment of a meteorite.
- It is not a green crystal.
- It does not have a crystalline structure like sapphire, garnet or diamond.
- It is a natural glass formed from melted terrestrial rocks.
This combination of a cosmic impact and material from the Earth makes moldavite an extraordinary reminder of the moment when space and our planet quite literally came together.
2. How can you recognise genuine moldavite?
The most common moldavite imitations are made from ordinary green glass. Some are smooth and relatively easy to identify, while others are given an artificially textured surface that may resemble natural moldavite at first glance.
A green colour or deeply sculpted surface alone is therefore not sufficient proof of authenticity.
Genuine moldavite may contain:
- irregular elongated or oval bubbles,
- internal flow patterns and wavy structures,
- fine strands of lechatelierite,
- natural variations in colour,
- small irregularities caused by rapid cooling.
Lechatelierite is a high-temperature form of silicon dioxide. Its delicate, sometimes thread-like structure is one of the important gemmological features associated with natural moldavite.
What should raise suspicion?
- a perfectly uniform, bright green colour without any variation,
- an excessively regular or repetitive surface texture,
- an unusually large and seemingly flawless piece offered at a suspiciously low price,
- several stones that look almost identical,
- a seller who cannot provide any information about the stone’s origin,
- perfectly clear glass without any visible internal structure.
However, none of these features is definitive proof of an imitation. A genuine faceted moldavite can be exceptionally clean, while manufactured glass can also contain bubbles.
When purchasing a more valuable stone, it is safest to rely on an experienced gemmologist, professional examination or a trustworthy jewellery retailer. Laboratory methods can distinguish natural moldavite from manufactured glass much more reliably than home tests.
Avoid tests involving scratching, heating or chemical substances. They are unreliable and may permanently damage both the stone and the finished piece of jewellery.

3. Why is moldavite so rare and expensive?
Moldavite was created during a single extraordinary event millions of years ago. It does not continue to form in veins within the Earth, and its natural supply cannot be renewed. Every discovered piece therefore represents part of a finite amount of material scattered after the Ries impact.
Several factors influence its value:
Origin and traceability
Reliable information about origin is particularly important for moldavite. A stone from a verified Czech locality has greater collector and commercial credibility than material without any information about where it was found.
Colour
Transparent green shades are often the most desirable, particularly vivid bottle green and light olive green. However, this does not mean that darker moldavite is not genuine. Moravian stones can naturally display darker olive and brownish-green tones.
Transparency and internal structure
Faceted moldavite should interact beautifully with light, but it does not have to be completely flawless. Fine bubbles and flowing patterns may be natural parts of its internal structure.
Size and condition
Large, undamaged specimens are considerably rarer than small fragments. In natural rough pieces, the quality of the preserved surface sculpture, the completeness of the stone and its unusual shape may also influence its value.

Quality of the cut and jewellery craftsmanship
When choosing a piece of jewellery with moldavite, the stone itself is not the only important consideration. The symmetry of the cut, the setting, the quality of the gold or silver and the protection provided against accidental impact all contribute to the final value.
Moldavite has the properties of natural glass and therefore requires careful, professional setting. The price of a piece of jewellery cannot be determined by the stone’s weight alone. Two moldavites of the same size may differ significantly in value depending on their colour, transparency, surface, origin and quality of craftsmanship.
4. Where is moldavite found?
The best-known and most important moldavite deposits are located in southern Bohemia. The stones are primarily found in ancient sandy and gravelly sediments in the wider regions surrounding České Budějovice, Český Krumlov, Prachatice, Trhové Sviny and Týn nad Vltavou.
Well-known southern Bohemian localities include:
- Besednice,
- Chlum nad Malší,
- Vrábče,
- Slavče,
- Ločenice,
- Radomilice and the surrounding area.
Moldavites from the area around Besednice are particularly famous for their deep surface grooves, sometimes described by collectors as having a hedgehog-like texture. They are among the most visually distinctive and sought-after natural specimens.
Other deposits are located in western and south-western Moravia, particularly in the area between Třebíč, Ivančice, Jaroměřice nad Rokytnou and Znojmo. Smaller and much rarer occurrences have also been recorded in the Cheb region and occasionally in central Bohemia.
A known locality is not automatically a public place where anyone may search or dig for stones. Many sites are privately owned, protected or subject to legal restrictions. Anyone searching for moldavite must respect landowners, nature and all applicable regulations.

5. What colours can genuine moldavite have?
The belief that every genuine moldavite must be bright emerald green is one of the most common misconceptions. Its appearance is influenced by the chemical composition of the original rock, the amount of iron and other elements, the thickness of the stone and the lighting conditions in which it is viewed.
Genuine moldavite may be:
- pale green,
- light green,
- bottle green,
- olive green,
- brownish green to brown,
- occasionally a very vivid green.
Southern Bohemian moldavites are often bottle green, while Moravian specimens tend to be darker, more olive-toned or brownish green.
The perceived colour can also change depending on the thickness of the stone. A thicker specimen may appear almost black in ordinary light but reveal green or olive tones when held against a light source. Faceted moldavite often appears brighter than a rough specimen because the cut allows light to pass through the stone more effectively.
There is therefore no single “correct” shade of moldavite. The natural character of the colour, internal structure, traceable origin and overall quality are more important than achieving the brightest possible green.
Moldavite in jewellery: a Czech story you can wear
Every moldavite was created during the same extraordinary event, yet no two pieces are completely identical. A different shade, a tiny bubble or a subtle flowing line inside the stone should not automatically be regarded as an imperfection. These features can form part of the record of its creation and its long journey through the Czech landscape.
In jewellery, moldavite looks beautiful on its own or combined with Czech garnet, zirconia or yellow gold. The warm tone of yellow gold enhances its olive and bottle-green shades, while lighter stones create contrast and allow its distinctive colour to stand out.
